DuffleBag Theatre Comes to Eastend School
On April 29, 2026, Dufflebag Theatre added Eastend School to its tour of 23 schools across Saskatchewan. The “nearly world-famous” Dufflebag Theatre adapted The Three Musketeers for Eastend School, casting students in the main parts and creating a spontaneous theatre experience.
No one was chosen ahead of time, so when the show began, the narrator invited students on stage to play the main parts. They were given costumes, props and guidance from the experienced narrator as they created the play alongside the DuffleBag actors.
Improvisation was key because whatever the students did was incorporated into the show. Other students became the audience.
Laurie Laird, school librarian and longtime volunteer with Eastend Arts Council, coordinated the theatre games with the school. “Live theatre gives students the opportunity to do something that isn’t common,” says Laurie. “Theatre allows students to express themselves and experience a different creativity.”
‘Laurie attended the play and wrote about it for the school:
“Some students had various roles in the play. Lincoln was D'Artagnan, Tauriel was Constance, Zane was ‘the good looking one’ (Athos), Abby was ‘the strong one’ (Artemis), Gavin was the king, and Maclaine was a table.
We really enjoyed the Dufflebag actors, Markus, Holly and Karen. Their enthusiasm created a fun filled theatrical experience for all students Kindergarten to grade 9.
Eastend School appreciates the Eastend Arts Council’s contribution of $1200 to help bring DuffleBag Theatre to the school. Thank you to Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils for providing events like this to give schools access to the arts. Thank you also to the Joint Recreation Grant Committee of the Town of Eastend, RM of White Valley No. 49 and RM of Arlington No. 79 for the grant that made DuffleBag Theatre accessible to Eastend School.”
Dufflebag Theatre has been performing since 1992. Now based in Toronto, Dufflebag performs over 600 shows a year.
