Please note the date, WEDNESDAY July 22, and join us when Stegner resident James Papoutsis reads from two of his works.
In his short story “Centennial Year”, we meet a young Greek immigrant boy who must act as translator for his father after the father strikes a neighbourhood child. The father, unaware that the common Greek practice of disciplining other people’s children is not allowed in Canada, remains defiant in the face of a police investigation, and the young boy, caught between the standards of his adopted home and the traditions of his family and culture, learns what it means to navigate two sometimes irreconcilable cultures.
James will also read from a novel-in-progress, "Songs of the Burning City" set in rural Kalamata in the south of Greece in the 1920s and 1930s.
